You've updated your DNS records, but your domain still shows the old website, an error or nothing at all? This is usually just DNS taking a little time to update. Here's what's happening and how to check.
What is DNS propagation?
When you change a DNS record, internet providers around the world keep the old answer in their cache for a while. They pick up the new one when the cache expires. This usually takes minutes to a few hours and in rare cases up to 24 to 48 hours. During that time some people see the new site and some still see the old one.
How to check
- Use a free online DNS checker (search for "DNS propagation checker"). Enter your domain and choose record type A. When most locations show your HTN Cloud IP address, you're nearly there.
- Try your site on your phone using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. It uses a different DNS cache.
- Open your site in a private or incognito browser window, so your browser doesn't show a cached copy.
Common problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The old website | DNS hasn't updated yet, or an old A record is still there | Check that there is only one A record for @, pointing to your HTN Cloud IP, then wait |
| yourdomain.com works but www doesn't | No record for www | Add a CNAME www → yourdomain.com. See Which DNS records to add at your domain provider |
| "Your connection is not private" | The SSL certificate hasn't been issued yet | Wait until DNS has updated. AutoSSL then issues the certificate automatically. See Free SSL certificates: how AutoSSL works |
| An "Index of /" page or a default page | No home page in public_html | Upload your site or install WordPress. See How to put your first website online |
| "This site can't be reached" | A typo in the DNS record, or the record was saved for the wrong domain | Double-check the record's name and value at your domain provider |
Tip: you don't have to wait to start working. Log in to cPanel from the client area, create your email accounts and build your site while DNS updates.
Still not working after 48 hours? Open a support ticket with your domain name and a screenshot of your DNS records. We'll take a look. See How to contact support.
